Hey everybody!

I am using After Effects CS5.5
I have finally created my first composition which is like a small explosion which flares up, but the only problem is, my method of adding it to video footage (on After Effects) must be wrong, as I always get the rectangular black canvas come up with the explosion.

Can someone point me in the right direction of being able to add a composition to video footage without the black background appearing with it? Like some kind of cut-round tool, or making the black background invisable?

Help will be much appreciated!

Danger, Will Robinson!

You're trying to use AE intuitively, which DOES NOT work. You miss too many important things. You must begin at the beginning, or you'll just get stymied or frustrated. And here's the beginning:

Blowing off the basics in AE is like jumping into the deep end of the pool wearing lead weights. Or in the case of your comp, the 6-foot section of the pool... but you're still just as drowned, no?

But to answer your question directly, use one of AE's blend modes on that flame layer.
