I'm planning on purchasing adobe CS5 creative suite 5 production
premium student and teacher edition to learn how to use after effects, premiere pro and photoshop. Right now I have a custom pc which runs:
Windows XP
core 2 duo 3.0 GHZ,
EVGA GeForce 9500 GT 512MB 128-bit DDR2

I am planning on either updating my original custom PC or building a new custom PC to work with CS5. If I decide to update my original custom PC it will have:
window 7 64 bit
core 2 duo 3.0 GHZ
MSI N240GT-MD1G/D5 GeForce GT 240 1GB 128-bit GDDR5

If I decide to build a new custom PC running i5 processor it will have:
windows 7 64 bit
i5-Intel Core i5-650 Clarkdale 3.2GHz
MSI N240GT-MD1G/D5 GeForce GT 240 1GB 128-bit GDDR5

Is there a big difference between the Core 2 duo 3.0GHz and the i5-650 3.2GHz?
Thank you

A few things come immediately to mind:
  • Get more processors -- in AE and Premiere-Land, 4 cores ain't nothin'.
  • Your proposed system is woefully short on memory. I got an HP Z800 dual quad-core workstation primarily for AE work, and it has 24GB. If I could have afforded more, I would have gotten more.
  • You need to look at getting a hotter Nvidia graphics card... not for AE, but for Premiere. Look at the approved cards for Premiere that work with the Mercury Playback Engine.
  • You REALLY need to look over the system requirements for Premiere and AE CS5... and bear in mind that these are MINIMUM requirements.
  • You want to edit in Premiere... so where's your external esata RAID? You'll want that really big bit rate.
  • You aren't REALLY going with just one 500GB drive, are you? That's okay for the OS and your applications, but user files need to be on a separate drive. Think 1 TB.

Those are some good places to start looking. Yes, computers and software are more capable than ever, so why do you need all this additional hardware I mention? The people who work in multimedia -- including camera makers, software developers and users -- keep pushing the envelope of hardware & software's capabilities, so the ideal of a video production suite on a laptop is STILL unattainable.
