 | Make an anim a mask

Hello,
So this is a very simple question as I am a beginner on AE.
I have created - with Cinema 4D - a smoke animation. So I have smoke going from the left to the right of the screen.
I want some text layer to appear while the smoke is going on.
So I guess I have to duplicate the smoke layer in AE and then make it a mask !!?
I just don't know how to do this :)
Any help would be great !
Thanks !

you might be able to use the smoke footage as a track matte for the text layer. see this section of the manual for more on track mattes:

but you may also just be able to use the linear wipe effect (effects>transitions) and keyframe the wipe transition to time with the smoke movement.
