Trying to find the 'in' and 'out' buttons on AE cs4. WHERE ARE THEY? All I want to do is set the in and out points for my footage to export part of iyt to video, but I can't do it because I can't find the buttons, and help is, as ever no help at all... A screen shot would be appeciated, thank you.

In your comp timeline, go to the point where you want AE to begin rendering. Hit the b (for Begin) key. Go to the point where you want AE rendering to end and hit the n (for eNd) key. You've now defined your Work Area.

Add your comp to the Render Queue. In the Render Settings, make sure AE is set up to render Work Area only. Select your codec of choice, save the project and hit the Render button.

Happiness ensues.

It sounds like you're trying to jump into the deep end of the pool with AE. Bad idea. You need to know the basics, and your problem is about as basic as it gets.

To fix that problem, you can go here:

Or you can get everything you need to learn the app here:

Here is the relavent help page on editing layers in AE. Here is the relavent help page on keyboard shortcuts for editing.

There are tons of direct (and indirect) keyboard shortcuts in AE - we have both an AE keyboard as well as our new color shortcut stickers (just $12.95) that should be very helpful.

Great! Got a version of that keyboard that works for both After Effects and Final Cut Pro?

Didn't think so.

If you use keyboard shortcuts in more than one application -- and most people do -- you always end up memorizing the shortcuts for those apps for which you DON'T have the special keyboard... which are all your apps except one. Unless, of course, you like juggling multiple keyboards.

Personally, I have a keyboard for Final Cut Pro. It's shortcuts are even more confusing than AE's shortcuts!

Actually... there are some work arounds...

If you have the Apple Wireless Keyboard, you could put our AE stickers on the keyboard, then place a FCP skin on the keyboard when working in FCP and even swap over to a Photoshop skin when doing Photoshop. So that's 3 apps with 1 keyboard (or even 4 if you ever used Media Composer).

I like the sound of an FCP skin, is it like a dust cover that still allows you to type? Could do with one for typing in russian; something I can't do on the mac as I can't get my russian keyboard to work on it

It's form-fitting and very, very thin to allow you to type. As you can see on our Skins page (http://www.bella-usa.com/Keyboard_Skins/) it almost looks like it is part of the keyboard. Regarding the Russian, can't help you with that one!
