Masking question?
on Oct 6, 2010 at 1:23:33 pm

I am trying to complete a project in AE and cannot. I'm trying to animate a vacuum that removes different parts of carpet as it passes over it. It needs to reveal the layer underneath it. I cannot figure out how to accomplish this easily. Any suggestions?

How did you shoot this? On a green screen?

Is the footage a bunch of stills?

A little additional information about shat you have at the moment will help you get a straight answer.

Sorry - -

It is all imported from photoshop. No green screen and nothing fancy...It is as if you are looking down at the carpet from the ceiling and watching the vacuum cleaner on the rug. AS it makes a pass, it reveals the layer underneath it which happens to be my name. I've faked it by creating a different layer mask for frame of the animation and synching it with the movement of the vacuum, but there has to be an easier way. Perhaps maybe a gradient mask, but I do not know how to do that. Hope that clarifies my original post!

If you're talking about a straight line, you could use a solid as a track matte:

If it's a curved path, it gets a little more complicated.
