Bill Hoovermask? wipe?

I have to animate a vacuum that travels over a carpet. As it travels over the carpet, it must reveal the layer beneath it - almost as if it is wiping it away or erasing it as it travels along the path. How do I do this? I have tried masking each "pass," but it is not working. I am new AE and have no idea how to accomplish this at all.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there a tutorial that may help?

What do you mean by, "it's not working"? It should be working, but then that depends entirely on how you're trying to do it. We will need a lot more information to figure out what's gone wrong.

Since you're new to AE, I would highly suggest you go through these resources. Some of them specifically cover masking.
