Im using for my compositions very big pictures ( 5685 × 1887 ) and while this tricks help me :
-turn off open GL
-not use multiprocessing
-save the video in other hard disk ( I do it sometimes in a external one )

The one thing you can do is get more RAM. You don't have very much at all. Walter Soyka, who makes really big AE animations for multi-screen, has 32 GB on his Mac Pro.

If you really want to reduce the problems of not being able to use big layers, you should get AE 10 (CS5). It will use all the RAM you can put on your machine, and big layer problems almost never happen.

If you don't need them that big you would do well to reduce the size before you bring it in and it won't take so much ram just to read the image.

Reality? What did you make it?
