I have a problem motion tracking a panning camera in After Effects. The 2 main issues are:
1. When my points go offscreen the tracker behaves weirdly.
2. The trackers do not always stick to my chosen points despite being high contrast.

As a relatively new user, am I missing something? Is there a better/simpler way or settings to use?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This page has tons of useful stuff on motion tracking. It should help you figure out how to get a better track (contrast is not the only thing you need).
This tutorial deals more specifically with motion tracking a pan. I think you will find several useful techniques there - not just for motion tracking.
