Earl PensorHow to move a mask ?

Hello everyone!
I'm making a project in which I'm required to replace a motion-tracked object with its background. Basically what I want is this :
So how do I motion track a mask in this way ? I was able to link the mask to the motion-tracking data (stored in the null object) but for some reason, the entire background video was dancing through the mask (probably because the mask and the layer are inseparable). Am I doing anything wrong ?
Any help appreciated :)

What you're describing is a track matte.

You can add your masks (or other means of setting transparency) to a layer and then make that layer a track matte for the underlying layer. You apply your motion tracking keyframes to the track matte.
