Video wall question

This is my first post here & I should qualify the fact that I am a complete beginner in relation to AE. My question is around a video wall tutorial I have been trying to follow here:

I am getting lost in step 2. It appears that there is a track matte on the video layer, but I'll be blowed if I can get it to work for me. Does anyone know of a similar tutorial that I can achieve the same kind of result or better still, kindly (and slowly) talk me through the above?

I think the key lies in Step 1 with Ayato's cryptic phrase, "It need alpha channel". If that multiscreened photoshop layer doesn't have an alpha channel in between all those screens, you're hosed.

John Fischer did the same effect here on the cow in his tutorial. Might be a little easier to follow.
