How do I learn After Effects?????
on Sep 28, 2009 at 1:02:16 am

I'm an experienced Avid & Final-Cut editor.

However now I'm in a small shop and versitility is needed . . . . . i.e. it would help if I could do a few basic things on After Effects & DVD studio Pro.

Aside from taking a class what's a good overview for understanding After Effects???
And what's a good tutorioal system for teaching and practicing the basics???

Any suggestions??
Books
On-line tutorials
CD tutorials

Video Copilot has a great set of beginner video tutorials and a heap of other tutorials, covers motion graphics and visual effects. I almost don't like referring to it because it just seems to be "THE" common answer nowadays, but it really is a great resource.

And use the after effects Help a lot! Look up topics as you start to learn about them... there is so much in there that can help you learn the in depth stuff, it really is a great help resource.

If you want a book, Chris and Trish Meyers have a few. They are recognised as some of the best after effects teachers i think. I have After Effects Apprentice and it was pretty good for getting the basics in various areas. I don't usually like books but I think it was useful.

Hi Rory,
I was in your shoes about 2.5 years ago. The best way that I have learned After Effects has come with learning the basics of layers and keyframes. One of the best ways to learn the concepts of layers and such is to get a solid foundation of Photoshop first. By learning this you can quickly pick up on what the concepts are. Final Cut Pro uses keyframes in its transition and effects editor. After Effects is technically the same as Photoshop, but all your doing is creating motion to layers to show a story. Good tutorial sites can be

I have to disagree with Wade about the tutorial sites that he mentioned. The tutorials on AETUTS+ are more for intermediate to advanced folks, as they don't teach the basics. GSG is even worse; Nick may be fine as a motion graphics designer, and his videos may be interesting for people who already know what they're doing, but they're not good for learning the basics of After Effects.

These tutorials on Video Copilot are far better suited to beginners.

As I said on the thread that Anita linked to, I recommend working your way through the resources listed under "Getting started" on this page.

I have used http://www.lynda.com with much success. Granted it is a pay site, but it has actual training tutorials. Self-paced, self-guided videos that start you from the beginning with the basics and take you all the way to end. Those other sites are great if you want to learn how to do specific effects, but they don't actually explain why you're doing one thing or another. But don't get me wrong they are a great resource and I have turned to them numerous times for help. But when I was looking to learn After Effects, lynda.com really came through.
