Emitting Particles from Shapes without Using Particular

Hello,

I'm wondering if there's a way to emit particles from a shape using only the particle systems that come with AE CS5 (Particle World, Particle Playground, Particle System II). Basically, I just want to generate sparkles in the shape of an object that fall downwards after being born.

Thanks!

Shape, schmape. Forget the shape.

Instead, make a mask on a comp-sized solid: Solid #1. Make a keyframe for the resulting mask path. Make another solid: Solid #2. Paste the mask path information into the new solid's position property -- you get a 2-second-long position animation, and you can adjust the length. Turn off the visibility eyeball icons on both solids.

Now you can use a pick- whip expression from the particle effect's emitter position to Solid #2's position property.

Here's another approach. You MIGHT be able to paste Solid #1's mask path info directly into a particle emitter position property but I've never tried it. So I don't know if it would work.

You might be able to do this with the Shatter effect.
