How to make this camera effect?
on Apr 25, 2016 at 7:42:48 am

Hi, I'm trying to create a similar camera movement for a spot video (i'm studying, not professional), I wonder is there is an script or tecnique in order to create this same camera movement as the follow video: I have a footage of a girl in screen chroma key removed, and I wonder how create this move camera zoom and change like this:

-Minute from 0:44 to 0:46, how to make that zoom in the girl that is repeated?

-Minute from 0:40 to 0:41, how move the gril from "side to side" (i'm not engluish) how to make that fx?

-Minute from 0:50 to 0:51, that fx that appears girl 3 time coming from left to rigth, something tell me is "time echo", is that right? because I don't find any tutorial of that,

-Minute form 1:54 to 1:55, hot to zoom and rotate is that way in camera?

-Minute 1:09 how to make appear from behind the girl, another person?

Please, my results are horrible, any kind suggestions?

While I admire your ambition this is asking a lot for a "class assignment" video.
Perhaps you would be better off with approximations or just basics.

All of what you ask for is doable in more than one way.But perhaps you should take a look through the effects folders and reading the titles find some which you can adapt.

Someone may have time to work out all of the "expressions " for you but it is still a lot of work. Are you sure you could then have the knowledge to adapt what people told you to do, to your own project?

Potentially there are days of work involved to get specific steps worked out . Often studio producers use canned effects which are then tweaked for these commercial videos.

This is not "an overnight fix" you are asking for. Try your hand at some expression writing. And it is very late in the semester for skills which cah take a long time to hone.

I can not pay you, can you tell me, at least, any clue to achieve that? For example, I have a chroma key removed girl singing, then, to move the camera like in the minute 0:40 to 0:41

I will try with "sure target" from videocopilot, and in order to make the first "echo zoom" of minute 0:40, how can I achieve that, whit efect is that?

I do not see an "echo zoom"

I see a layer cut between to clips with a mask in between. You can also see the layer has some small layer effect bleeding between the two if you go frame by frame.

It is hard to scrub through an online vide to see what is going on. But to me it looks like a straight jump with no easing.

Jut line up your layers with your mask of choice. You can set a null shape layer with your timing slider at the top and pick whip any opacity, scale or any other cut actions to the same slider effect object.

Suggest you generate a wave form. Study the wave form and mark that layer for your timing event. Use that to pick whip effects to the music timing and some how generate the null from that or put make a slider effect from that.

Either use an illustrator or Photoshop
file as a mask or make one from a shape layer. You can then scale it or change transparency via a pick whip to the slider as well. You can look at this all as key frames or as a graph with timing easing etc. So many decisions. So many reviews to tweak it right.
Do this,. Look at your sample ideal clip. Write a list of what it does. How fast in frames and seconds it does what you like. Look at opacities etc. Use that list to refer back as you work.
As a student this is a good time to consider will you do motion video to someone else's deadlines for pay. ( down and dirty, hose it out the door) or will you be " un artiste" who lolls over decisions and to whom it is never just right ? Or will you try to find the in-between ?

As I sad before, there are many ways to accomplish this transition at 0:40. You could even do it in Premiere with a simple transition and a layer mask. Not as precisely but the move at 0:40 is very fast anyway.

The move at 0:50 could also be done in many ways.
If you have a plug in then go for it.

If not then just a keycolor blend or black overwrite. Or whatever aplpha blend you like.

Down and dirty make as many duplicate layers as you need. Stagger them for time in/out as you like.
Edit audio accordingly.

Again there are many ways to do it.

Precomping as needed.

1:54- 1:55 looks like a scale effect.

I do not see a "rotate" .
I see a placement of composition elements which are sequentially juxtaposed to suggest more motion that the eye perceives across the transition(s). Study them frame by frame if you want to learn.

I would use the expressions sampler called "follow."

The expressions sampler is an old project file from Adobe. You can have a copy of it here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B2S2b7kN6I8iWlhIeVBYUS1jTzQ

The "follow" composition in the Expression Sampler project has 9 solid layers. The first layer is called leader. There are no expressions on the leader.

Layers 2 - 9 are duplicates of each other. The expressions are built by Adobe, and they created their own effect (probably an animation preset) called "Delay" which is not to be confused with the audio effect. Here is a screen capture:

The folder you provided has no . aep file included. It also therefore cannot generate the precomps that the layerless ( from what was provided ) compositions are made from.

The "template" compositions do not "twirl down " to reveal the layers or the expressions as revealed by the key command EE. I could make a small video to demonstrate this, if needed.

If you want Susan to see how to do the "follow" Then you know all she needs is for you to copy the text of the expression so she can drop it into her own layer. And then explain how to tweak it to match the moves at the time markers she defined in the video.

Here is what "follow" looks like as plain text, prehaps the expression could be reconstructed from that.

Try opening it with after effects, not text editor.

.aet is an After Effects template.

That has been done 3 times. Also numerous tries at opening your folder in other ways to see if an. aep file was included at all.
To help the young student try your "follow" example why do you not just copy the expression and insert it right here in a reply so she can see what it is you are taelling her to do ?

I think expressions are perhaps beyond her at this point in her studies which is why I gave her the solutions which are listed above.

You pulled those files from some package and did not think to .zip them with the .aep file to give the entire stack.

Because it's not one expression. There are a bunch.

Here is another link to a similar project. Fingers crossed!

Adobe built this expression (even though its more than an expression) so the Expression effects are built into the interface. We will have to cheat that:

Here is the expression on the position property:

delay = effect("Follow")("Delay");
include = effect("Follow")("Position");
basedOnIndex = effect("Follow")("Based On Index");

if (include == 1){
try{
L = effect("Follow")("Leader");
if (basedOnIndex == 1){
delta = Math.abs(L.index - index)*delay;
}else{
delta = delay;
}
L.toWorld(L.anchorPoint,time - delta)
}catch(err){
value
}
}else{
value
}

The expression is also on the following properties:

Position,
Rotation,
Scale,
Opacity,
Based on Index.

Each of those mentioned above are Effect > Expression Controls > Checkbox Control, but you will need to re-write the expression (pickwhip it probably) to a new instances of expression control effects.

In addition, you will need an Effect > Expression Controls > Slider Control.

Here is the scale expression:
delay = effect("Follow")("Delay");
include = effect("Follow")("Scale");
basedOnIndex = effect("Follow")("Based On Index");

if (include == 1){
try{
L = effect("Follow")("Leader");
if (basedOnIndex == 1){
delta = Math.abs(L.index - index)*delay;
}else{
delta = delay;
}
L.scale.valueAtTime(time - delta)
}catch(err){
value
}
}else{

}

Here is the x Rotation expression:
delay = effect("Follow")("Delay");
include = effect("Follow")("Rotation");
basedOnIndex = effect("Follow")("Based On Index");

if (include == 1){
try{
L = effect("Follow")("Leader");
if (basedOnIndex == 1){
delta = Math.abs(L.index - index)*delay;
}else{
delta = delay;
}
L.rotationX.valueAtTime(time - delta)
}catch(err){
value
}
}else{
value
}

Here is the y rotation expression:
delay = effect("Follow")("Delay");
include = effect("Follow")("Rotation");
basedOnIndex = effect("Follow")("Based On Index");

if (include == 1){
try{
L = effect("Follow")("Leader");
if (basedOnIndex == 1){
delta = Math.abs(L.index - index)*delay;
}else{
delta = delay;
}
L.rotationY.valueAtTime(time - delta)
}catch(err){
value
}
}else{
value
}

Here is the z rotation expression:
delay = effect("Follow")("Delay");
include = effect("Follow")("Rotation");
basedOnIndex = effect("Follow")("Based On Index");

if (include == 1){
try{
L = effect("Follow")("Leader");
if (basedOnIndex == 1){
delta = Math.abs(L.index - index)*delay;
}else{
delta = delay;
}
L.rotation.valueAtTime(time - delta)
}catch(err){
value
}
}else{
value
}

Here is the opacity expression:
delay = effect("Follow")("Delay");
include = effect("Follow")("Opacity");
basedOnIndex = effect("Follow")("Based On Index");

if (include == 1){
try{
L = effect("Follow")("Leader");
if (basedOnIndex == 1){
delta = Math.abs(L.index - index)*delay;
}else{

}

I think Susan has gone on to find her own way to accomplish the same task. And so what if there were multiple expressions. All she needed was the expression as cut and paste text.

Multiple expressions are just multiple cut and paste operations.

Then they get tweaked.

I recommend you try them.

[Susan Lan] "where do you get it from?"

I got it from Adobe in 2008 (or so). They had it hidden inside a bunch of files that installed with After Effects. At the time, they were trying to help provide "brain storming" type of things, but the only thing I found useful was the Expression Sampler.

[Susan Lan] "hasn't got camera movement but shapes movement, right?

Yes, but also the "shapes movement" are expressions applied to various layers that then follow the leader layer. The shapes layers are actually solids, but they can also be keyed-footage (like Selena). You can also of course keyframe animate the Delay parameter, from say, .1 to 0 over 15 frames, so layers appear to jump together.

You'll notice the layers FOLLOW the original layer. They are behind it. You can change that to LEAD THE LEADER by changing the { - delta } to a { + delta }. You will probably need some layers as -delta and some layers as +delta. Then animate back and forth from 0.

Susan,

Can you see hit EE and see the revealed expressions?

Copy the text and transfer it into your own layer properties.
Hit "0" and then when the frames are set look at your own layer motion.

How is it looking?

The expression uses Expression Control effects. If you copypasta just the expression, then it will return an error.

This part here would have no referent:

delay = effect("Follow")("Delay");
include = effect("Follow")("Position");
basedOnIndex = effect("Follow")("Based On Index");

Moreover, these definitions are used in the expression itself and those operations need to be defined.

[Susan Lan] "Sorry, I mean, in each one of the "followers layers"

Yes.

Also, I was thinking that you may have some issues because the layers will follow the leader, and you may want the images to line up like a V pattern. You can do this by using 2 null layers as your leader layers. Each null would need different motion paths, so their follow layers line up on that path.
