Keying Transparent Fabrics?

I'm working on a project with a character in a sheer (gauzy) outfit on a green screen. Are we nuts or is this possible? I know it's not ideal and I'm pushing for tests before the shoot.

It IS possible, but keep this stuff in mind:
  • You need a VERY well-lit subject & background, keeping in mind that Keylight likes its chroma key backgrounds a bit on the dark side
  • You need good images -- don't expect success from a DSLR or HDV, going with the highest-quality acquisition codec you can use
  • You may have to mask & key the sheer fabric separately from the rest of the subject
  • You are oh-so-extremely wise to shoot test video to overcome the trouble spots before you shoot for real

Andrew Devis has a tutorial series for multi-later keying that covers keying shear fabrics that may help you out.

Hey, I've worked with that footage, but didn't know it was part of a tutorial. Thanks!

Gotcha. Thanks so much for the tips. Will "well lit subject" still let us match the lighting of the location plates? I'm asking them to light the green screen separately for flatness.

the screen will definitely be lit separately from the subject.

as for the lighting of the subject, your key light should reflect any obvious lighting in the plate, but after keying, you will likely need to make adjustments to the subject while you are compositing it with the plate.

here's an older written tutorial, but you can find newer video tutorials out there:
