Good news, everyone! The update is out.
Not only does it fix the issue of cached previews not playing back in real time on El Capitan, but it improves a number of other things too like the speed of importing image sequences from a network drive:

The latest bug fix created another bug -- RED files that previously imported just fine no longer do.

It's always best to do ANY kind of application modification after a project's over. If you do the update anyway, you're just rollin' the dice... especially when Adobe's concerned.

Just wait for the all-clear from other AE users, RED camera owners. Don't believe the Adobe propaganda.

Looks like it's not an issue on Windows, but is on Mac.

So, yes, if you use .r3d files on Mac, you might want to hold off on this one (or use CC 2014 still...)

There is a fix suggested for using .R3D files on Mac OSX with the 13.7.1 update: https://forums.adobe.com/message/8618262#8618262
