Why are the position coordinates different from the x,y coordinates in the info panel? Is there a way to make them match?

The (0,0) position for x,y starts at the top left corner of the document area...meanwhile, (0,0) for position's x,y coordinates seems to start at a random(?) point off canvas. Is there a reason for this and is there anyway to change this?

Are you confusing a layer's Anchor point for the layer's position property? For position, 0,0 is upper left. For Anchor point, AE defaults to the center point of the layer.

Also, parenting can change the child layer's origin point.

If your layer is the child of another layer (parenting), then its coordinates will be expressed relative to the transforms of its parent layer, not as absolute composition coordinates.
