I know I can create a solid and then paste vectors from AI onto it and create a mask in the shape of the vector, but what I have is several objects whose placement is important, and pasting them one at a time doesn't get them in the right position. I figure there has to be some way to use the imported vectors to do the same thing, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how. After getting the masks set up, I'm going to then have the shapes morph into something else, so they have to be "morphable" masks.
If you're going to morph them, you're pretty much stuck using the illustrator paths to make shape layers -- the paths of which can be animated for morphing purposes -- and using the shape layers as track mattes.
