Why isn't 24 GB of Ram enough

With Premiere Pro already running on my mac, I start up AE and sometimes get the message "The CPU-accelerated ray-traced 3D renderer does not have enough free video memory to operate. The ray-traced3D renderer will use the CPU." The message goes on from there but you get the idea. I am running on version 10.10.5 on a mac pro (mid 2010) It has a 2 x 2.66 GHz 6-core intel Xeom processor. 24 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC ram. I have a NVIDIA Quadro 4000 2048 MB graphics card. I would have thought that 24 GB of ram would be enough for both programs to run but do I need more?

That message refers to VRAM, or RAM on the GPU, of which you have only 2GB. Much of that available VRAM is likely being consumed by Premiere Pro.

(Also, 24 GB is healthy, but really a huge amount of regular RAM for Ae.)

So are we thinking that the lack of VRAM comes from the limitations from the graphics card?

Ray tracing is found in older AE versions. Which one are you running?

The ray-tracing renderer is in the current releases, too, but you're right that it's not the way forward [link] for 3D in Ae.

I wouldn't use ray tracing. I'd use Cinema 4D Lite, bundled with AE, to do the same thing in a lot less time.

Ray-tracing is a dead end in AE. It ALWAYS took a long time to render, it was accellerated -- sort of -- by certain Nvida cards, but AE doesn't use them any more.

Yes.
