Paint a person for chroma key - Which paint to use?
on Oct 12, 2015 at 2:25:57 pm

Hello!

I'm shooting a videoclip and I'm looking to do something like the chroma key effects on this video: https://vimeo.com/album/2032211/video/50284812

My question is what kind of paint should I use to achieve a uniform color for the chroma key and be healthy to use on a person (it will get in contact with the skin, eyes, mouth, etc.). Anyone already made an experiment like this? What were your results?

An easier method would be to just buy a green screen suit - not expensive:

if you still want to use paint, i'd look at tempera paints, or maybe a finger paint that you'd water down a bit. anything that's safe enough to use in a elementary school, should be safe for what you are doing.

and look for one that says 'non-staining'... i think you'd have some angry models if their faces were tinted green for a day or two.

Thanks! The green suit wouldn't work because the idea of the video is to show the chroma key slowly dripping over the person until completely covering her. My main worries is that using regular paint it wouldn't be thick enough or be slightly transparent affecting the keying after. Thanks for the answer though! I'll buy some and test them.

After making some tests I'll be setting in making some home made paint with blue or green Mika flakes and moisturizer :( Not the best solution for a chroma key paint that is going to be pouring on top of a person but: - Health wise it's safe since it's going to come in contact with skin and I can fine tune it to achieve the consistency that I need. Any further ideas on what kind of paint should I use?
