I'm trying to make it look like a piece of thread or rope is sort of being dragged along a path, i.e. to create words like the image below.

I know I could do a stroke mask reveal kind of thing, but the intention is to make it look like one end of the thread is moving and the rest of the thread is following behind it. I found this http://www.motionscript.com/mastering-expressions/follow-the-leader.html but my initial thought is that thread will be broken up into pieces.

I also thought of using 3D stroke but somehow adding a thread/rope-like texture to the stroke, but don't if that's possible.

Any suggestions? Thanks!
