Michael MausGeneral knowledge question...

I am working on my second after effects project and just curious if this is normal for anyone else.

I have a 63sec clip that I rotoscoped, added two compositions to, some text effects...

I am in the middle of rendering the final version now. It is estimated to take roughly 28hrs to render this 1min clip...
I know my machine is not really built as an AE powerhouse. I rendered half of the clip as a test and it saved 30sec at almost 12gigs....

So the time seems long and I think this is part to hardware and part to I have it rendering at 1024x768... still seems long to me. I have turned off all the unused services that I could to try and free up as much hardware resources I could.
The final file I am scared to think of how large it is going to be, but wont find out for another 20+ hours.... :\

This this seem normal for such a small project?

What are your memory and multiprocessing settings?

See this recent thread for some guidance:

Thank you for the quick response. I have read your posting and the link on the other site. I unfortunately cant view those settings unless I stop the current render.

As I have 23hr and 52 min currently into this render...and an estimated 16hr and 33min left (WOOHOO...Past 50%)...I dont want to stop it to test, but will as soon as I can.

If you're that new to AE, you probably would benefit A LOT by spending some quality time here:

43 hours. Good Lord.
To make any kind of accurate diagnosis we need to know the PRECISE OS & AE versions, down to the last decimal point...
The media container & codec of video footage in the comp...
the effects used in the comp...
if working in 3D, the number of lights used...
wheher or not you tried to use ray-tracing...
and your shoe size.

That last one's a joke.

So here is all the info:

Computer Hardware:
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit) SP1

CPU: Intel i7 920 @ 2.67GHz (4 Cores (8 with Hyper-Threading))

Installed RAM: Corsair Dominator 12GB DDR3 1600

Graphics Card: NVIDA GeForce GT 620 (Driver 355.82)

Motherboard: Asus Rampage 2 Extreme with Intel X58/ICH10R chipset

Hard Drive: Western Digital Blue 500GB, SATA, NTFS partition, 344GB used 121GB Free.
Unfortunately I cant get to the hard drive to see if it is 5400 or 7200 RPM and im sure it doesn't make a difference as I am pretty sure this is one of my bottlenecks.
Yes I only have 1 hard drive at this time and know that I should have a second drive at least for the scratch files...just dont have the resources at this time to set that up.

Adobe Products:
After Effects - CS6 (11.0.0.378)
Photoshop - CS6 (13.0.1 x64)
Premier - CS6 (6.0.5 (001 (MC: 264587))
Audition - CS6 (5.0.2 Build 7)

I had to re-render my video after some last minute changes. I used this opportunity to play with some of the settings, but it did not seem to make much of a dent in the rendering time.

I change the "RAM reserved for other apps" from 5GB to 3GB alloting for RAM available for Ae to change from 7GB to 9GB.
I also checked the "Render Multipule Frames Simultaneously"
Installed CPUs: 8
CPUs reserved for other apps: 2
RAM allocation per background CPU: 2GB
Actual CPUs that will be used: 3

This only knocked my render time down from 43hr32min to 43hr15min on the same 1min4sec clip (with no audio). So I got 17min of my life back...I guess every little bit helps. :D

Thanks for any advise. I have determined that my PC is roughly 8yrs old and currently looking to replace it, but I am still surprised with the amount of memory I have and hard drive free space and a good CPU (IMO) that im still getting this long of a rendering queue time.
