Red Giant Instant 4k versus Instant HD for upscaling DV to 1080 HD - did they improve the algorithms?

Hi Everyone,

I was chatting with someone from Red Giant about its "Shoot Suite" 12.6, and specifically about the Instant 4k upscaling plugin.

The Red Giant rep said that they improved their algorithms for converting SD to HD (as well as adding 4k upconvertion functionality).

Is there anyone who has tried both Instant 4k and Instant HD for upscaling SD (DV) to HD (1080)?

We are finishing a feature documentary film that is 80% SD DV and 20% 1080 HD, and need to upscale the SD to match our HD timeline.

We tried using Instant HD recently in After Effects on the DV footage, and we were satisfied with the artifacts and jagged interlaced edges.

Thank you for your help and for sharing your experience.

(for others who might have a similar question)...

Just chatted with another technical support rep at Red Giant, and she said that Instant 4k is 400% faster in performing upscaling than Instant HD, AND, she said, that the algorithms are better for all of their higher resolution outputs (including upscaling to HD).

Ae CC 12.1 added a built-in Detail-preserving Upscale effect that you may want to try:

Thank you for the information, Walter...

Do you know how the quality of the AE CC upscaler compares with Red Giant's?

By the way, Red Giant recommended that I download the trial version of "Shooter's Suite" (that includes Instant 4k and Instant HD0, and the manuals and copyright dates for both versions of Instant HD are the same.

It looks like in the new software bundle, "Instant 4k" and "Instant HD" are included as separate plugins.

[Khashyar Darvich] "Do you know how the quality of the AE CC upscaler compares with Red Giant's?"

I'd get the demo and compare. Scaling quality can be pretty highly dependent on algorithm, its settings, and the footage, so it's hard to give a global answer.

Thanks, Walter...

Yes, it looks like it will be a matter of experimenting with settings and performing some test renders/outputs

Did you end up doing a comparison of Instant 4K with Detail preserving upscale ?
Cheers!
