Hi, everyone.

I'm trying to do a 2.5D head turn using a photo, but the head, of course, has a well defined chin that needs to turn with the rest of the head. If this was PS, I'd use a Distort or Warp effect or maybe skew it, but I don't know how to do this in AE. I've tried using some Distort effects, but they don't seem to work the same way they do in PS. How can I move the chin and jaw one way or the other without doing anything to the rest of the head?

Thank you, everyone.

Check out this tutorial using a Displacement Map drawn in Photoshop to achieve at least part of what you're looking for:

I'm not sure you'll ever get the chin into a full profile - that's 3D not 2.5D - but you'll get pretty close.

That definitely looks like it'll help the effect I'm going for, but I'm not sure it's going to move the chin left or right the way I need it to. Funny thing is, I had this tutorial bookmarked already. I just hadn't gotten around to watching it yet.

Thank you...Joe? Mr. Bourke?

Joe is fine with me. The effect may help you a little bit in the left and right movement, but don't expect to get it to go as far as a profile shot.

One thought that might give you a bit more motion is to use CrazyTalk facial animator (http://www.Reallusion.com). There's a free tryout version if I remember correctly, and a fast learning curve.

Hi, Joe. I don't expect it to get me all the way to a profile, as long as it gets me as close to a 1/8th head turn.

Again, it's funny, but I actually HAVE Crazy Talk; the full paid version, to, but I haven't had a chance to mess around with it. I'm in school, so I'm too busy 'caue homework takes up almost all the time I'm not working. Can you bring photos into that and make a 3D head? That might work, as long as the lip-syncing is good.

Thanks, Joe.

Tim -

Take a look at the demos on the CrazyTalk site, and you'll see that it works with both cartoon and photo-real styles.

The link below will show you just how good you can make a flat photo look:
