Weird Rotoscope Issue?
on Jul 23, 2015 at 6:11:02 am

I'm having a weird situation. I rotoscoped some footage of a soldier typing on a hologram beacon (that I created inside after effects) so that it looks like his fingers are touching it. When inside AE it looks fine and displays how I want it to so that it looks like he is typing on the hologram, but after I export it you can clearly see his hands going through the hologram beacon as if the rotoscoped work did not export. Am I missing something?

Have you accidentally set any guide layers [link]? Are you using 3D layers, but not previewing the active camera [link]?

I'm using a guide layer, but is that going to make a roto job not export? I'm not using any cameras or camera layers. I am using 3D layers.

[James Carver] "I'm using a guide layer, but is that going to make a roto job not export? I'm not using any cameras or camera layers. I am using 3D layers."

It depends. The guide layer will render in your preview, but not in final output.

Also, if your comp view is orthgraphic (i.e., front, top, etc.) or custom, it will not render that way either. The view that actually renders is "Active Camera."

A screenshot of your whole UI might help us understand what you see.

No prob.

Here is what it looks like inside the layer view: http://goo.gl/ADfoYB
Here is what it looks like in the comp view: http://goo.gl/tQH55c
And here is what it looks like once it's rendered (you can see the finger going through the hologram): http://goo.gl/8DvO54

The camera view is in Active Camera view also.

You're working at reduced resolution in your viewer -- note the banner on the rotobrush screenshot warning you to use rotobrush with the viewer at full resolution.

Thanks Walter -- that was the issue. I didn't see that warning (or didn't think it made that big of a difference). Had to work at full resolution. It looked fine at half. Working in full is definitely slower with the 4k footage unfortunately :/
