What is the difference between setting up the Outside Mask attributes in Keylight as a garbage matte, and simply using a layer mask as a garbage matte?

I've been reading this old thread:

https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/899939

In which Dave mentions setting the Layer Mask to None, and specifying that mask as the Outside Mask instead. In what scenario would one do this, as opposed to just using the Layer Mask directly?

There's not much difference between using the Outside Mask in Keylight and just animating a garbage mask in AE. They'll do the same thing. I've abandoned the use of Outside Mask. I now consider it as an unnceessary step.
