How to convert a 3d object into a motion path?
on Jun 18, 2015 at 5:41:57 pm

Hello,
I was asked to create an animation similar to this one: https://www.behance.net/gallery/15844201/Green-Hours-Jazz-Fest-2014
I've created the 3D drawing of the musical instrument with Rhino 5 and I was wondering if there is any way to transform the 3D object into a motion path in After Effects?
I was thinking I could use the wireframe I've drawn to animate the lines and use a 3D camera to change the perspective.
Thank you in advance

A very nice effect indeed.

I don't see a way around drawing the motion paths newly in AE or AI, as they would have to follow very specific routes. But having a 3D object as a reference should make this fairly straightforward.

Another option that comes to mind is animating textures along the surfaces of the sub-objects in 3D. But I seriously doubt that would make it any easier.

I'm not familiar with Rhino, but this is how I would do it in Blender. Convert the edges of the mesh to curves/splines, give them thickness, animate a colored texture along them, then render with a shadeless material. This probably isn't the answer you were looking for but hopefully it sparks an idea for a solution.
