I'm not sure how to get a really clean roto of this footage:

I researched the roto brush method and the hair is impossible.

I found another method using Calculations and levels to create a black and white matte by isolating color channels. In this one, I can't get the hair to divide from the background. One side (no shadow) is white and the other (shadow) leans to black.

How would you go about this roto if given this footage?

I for one wouldn't try roto at all. I would insist on a reshoot under proper conditions to separate the subject from the background.

That hair will be the death of you, particularly considering the crummy condition of the footage.
