Bear with me here, I'm new

anyway, this is where I'm at and I want my shadows to be projected onto the background image,

I know from classic-3D engine tutorials you can turn accepts lights off, accepts shadows on and then put the solid to multiply, but my two problems here are

1. for some reason turning it to accepts light off turns the entire solid back to one color, removing the shadow.

2. I can't use multiply on ray-traced 3D layer

So is there anyway for me to do this?

tell me if you need any other information to answer this question, thanks!

!!!EDIT: fixed by restarting after effects - _-

What version of AE do you have?
If it's CC, you have a much more powerful 3d option. (And also, you need to update to the latest version - because I can see you're not current.)

You should be able to set a white layer to "accepts shadows: only" to make a shadow catcher.
