Hello,

I have a MPEG2 graphic that has been sent to me (logo). The clip is 1440X1080 (HDV 1080/DVPRO HD 720 1.33 Widescreen) Upper Fields). I need to down-scale it to 720X576 for DVD. My workflow will be: After Effects (to edit, mask etc) + Adobe Premiere Pro + Adobe Media Encoder + Encore DVD = 720X576. My goal is to keep the quality as best as it can be for SD . What are the best techniques to do this using Adobe?

Thank you.

What will be the aspect ratio of the final deliverable file -- 4x3 or 16x9?

Hello Dave, thanks for the reply.

My final output will be 16x9 (720X576)

Here's the workflow I would use:
  • Make a 1920x1080, square-pixel comp in the proper frame rate.
  • Add the 1440x1080 footage to it, and scale the layer to fit the comp. Now do your work.
  • Make comp using the DV PAL Widescreen comp preset. Nest the previous comp in it and scale it to fit the comp.
  • Render using the media container & codec of choice.

I'm assuming there are no mixed frame rates between footage & comps, which would need additional work along the way.

Thank you Dave for the help.

I followed exactly what you mentioned and got some terrible results. I have a clip from the original (top graphic) that has been encoded using the same settings (720X576,MPEG2) and looks much richer and clearer compared to mine, which looks soft and blurry. This has been a living nightmare whenever I encode SD video, I just can't get it looking how I want. Plus the issue of gamma shifting.

I used all maximum settings out of AME etc, but still no sign of quality. I know I can't except good results from SD but the top sample looks far better then mine and I'm no video export, but that sure is, not quality I would accept. Any ideas Dave?

(720X576, Widescreen 25i Upper fields, MPEG2) ^

Thank you once again.

Sorry, but I only see a narrow horizontal strip of images over black. Is that what you intended to show?

Yes, thats what I am showing you, the graphic. Look at the two blue TEN logos. Top is the original, and has been encoded much better then mine.
Sick of seeing this soft look all the time after export.

Thank you Dave.

Well, instead of scaling down the HD comp, you could just encode it using Adobe Media Encoder. Since you're going to DVD, you'd use a DVD preset. You may have to build a preset for it, but 1) it's pretty easy and 2) I'm almost 99% sure one already exists.

Just prepare the files according to the needs of your DVD authoring application and you should be set. If you aren't, you might ask the people from whom you get the good-looking file how they did it.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, they wouldn't respond telling me what settings they used to get better quality.

I did as you said, and did the down-scaling in AME using the DVD present. Worst outcome yet. I don't understand what it takes to get decent compressed video.
