hi—

I need to use 3D passes of a glass-like material to distort or refract layers in After Effects CC

I understand that the plug-in Normality was able to achieve this effect very well, but that it no longer functions for AE CC

Is there an alternate method available? I know that Nuke has iDistort, which takes a 3d normal pass and refracts underlying footage. And my understanding is that Normality had done something similar.

Maybe there is a functionality in AE CC that I am missing. Or maybe there is a way to recreate that refraction effect through a clever compositing structure.

I appreciate any ideas, and encourage Adobe to look into the Normality functionality for a future feature set.

Thanks,
Mike

Frischluft ZbornToy [link] can help you with refraction, given a normal pass.

Thanks, Walter!

I knew about Frischluft as a great depth of field option, but I hadn't known about its refraction capabilities

I will try it out

Nuke's IDistort node is equivalent to After Effects' Displacement Map effect.
