I am trying to create a transition from one clip to another where the clip on top burns away very realistically. Does anyone know a good tutorial or way to do this past using the film burn with glow and roughen edges. That effect is ok but looking for something a bit more realistic.

If you shoot the flames as a practical effect at night or in a dark studio, you get to play with combustible materials, fire and fire extinguishers.... and it looks absolutely real.

You could check Video copilot for their Heat distortion plugins. And you have also this link which implies buying the effect or footage.
