If I'm working at half res and I do a RAM Preview (or Cache Work Area in BG), it only caches frames at half res?

And if I switch to quarter res, is AE using the half-res frames in the cache or does it have to reload the full size frames again?

I'm experiencing really sluggish performance with a 4K project. (AE cc2014.2, 64GB RAM, SSD cache, Mac tower)

I think the cache is resolution-dependent as you note. Changing viewer resolution means not using cache files from a different resolution.

As for sluggish performance with large comps, yes, this happens. I make really heavy use of proxies for my large-format work.
