All,

I am looking for some assistance in setting up a camera to do a plane fly-by in After Effects & Element 3d.

Looking to capture the plane as it approaches, follow it as it passes by and recedes into the distance.

Any suggestions for an easy and simple setup approach? Right now I may just do it as two seperate comps from each direction then simply cut them together as a transisiton in edit, but woudl like to get the camera follow through the pass....

Thanks

Brian

Use suretarget 2 by video copilot. It has an automatic rotation setting which you can use to rotate the camera. The tutorial walks you through how to assign bulls as camera positions. So you would have a group null on the plane and then a null at where the planes final position will be. Then keyframe the target value between your two nulls. Works pretty good.

Thanks Derek, I just watched the tutorial, and will see how effective the plugin works.

What kind of footage is the plane?

It sounds like it will have to be its own 3D animation from a 3D application. There's a LOT of perspective change in a short amount of time as the plane flies by.

The plane is not footage, but a 3D model inserted into After Effects using Element 3D. So I want to animate the model to fly by with the camera tracking it..

If he's using a 3D plane model with Element 3D, he shouldn't need a separate application.

if you just want the camera to track the plane, you can use the lookAt() function as an expression for the camera;'s orientation property.

here's a basic expression that would have the camera track target:

target = thisComp.layer("plane"); // change "plane" to the name of the layer you want to track
lookAt( position , target.position )
