This is a beginner level question here.
i have shot a video wherein the character (subject) is radiating black mists / particles.
so i'm facing a problem of placing the particles behind the subject..
right now i'm at stage where i can only place particles in front of the subject but not behind it.
kindly help.
will be grateful.

You need to separate the subject from the background, either by keying or by rotoscoping. Once you have separated them, you can use Particular's obscuration layer feature [link].

Also consider the Rotobrush tool, which helps automate rotoscoping (but which isn't perfectly intuitive and will require you to read up a bit):
