parenting nulls with animated layers
on Oct 21, 2014 at 1:50:09 pm

i am trying to link two nulls to an animated layer. so far so good.
the thing is, the nulls define the endpoints of a beam effect (thisComp.layer("Null SG01 01").transform.position).
now the problem is, as soon, as i parent the null to the animated layer, it is not functioning as an endpoint for
the beam effect anymore, but the beam is ending up somewhere in the comp (see images)...

any ideas or help on how to avoid this would be greatly appreciated.

thx in advance, and cheers
dennis

That's because as soon as you parent the null to another layer, its coordinates are now expressed relative to its parent, not relative to the comp. (Since the Beam layer's solid is comp-sized and centered, its own coordinate system matches the comp's coordinate system.)

Instead of this:
thisComp.layer("Null SG01 01").transform.position

Try this:
l = thisComp.layer("Null SG01 01");
l.toComp(l.transform.anchorPoint);
