rendering to create an interlaced file from AE
on Sep 23, 2014 at 6:28:48 pm

in After Effects 10.0.2.4

in the render Queue,

Render Settings > Field Render > "Upper Field First"

but the file comes out

Progressive.

.mov, mp4, m2v ... all progressive.

what is needed to be done to render this so the final file is interlaced?

thanks in advance for any help you can give

That should be all that is required to render interlaced video, unless the codec settings also have a place to indicate the field order.

Have you separated fields for any interlaced source material in interpret footage? How are you verifying that the output is progressive?

i don't see any other settings in any of the codecs that indicate interlaced or progressive.

no, i have not "separated fields for any interlaced source material in interpret footage"

but the real answer to that is "don't care AE, just do what i say. make it interlaced upon render, regardless of what's going on in the timeline."

the output file is going to a chyron mosaic clip player, which says "this file is Progressive, so i won't play it."

and the software "MediaInfo" looked at the file and says it's progressive as well.

thanks for the look see & response

You are using a comp frame rate that supports interlacing (25 or 29.97), yes?

If your comp's frame rate is already doubled to the field rate (i.e., 50 or 59.94), that would certainly lead to out-of-spec files.

yes, it's

Composition Settings > Frame Rate: 29.97

thanks for the ideas.

I don't have CS5 available to me right now, but I did try exactly this in CS5.5 and produced an interlaced .M2V direct from AE with no trouble.

Have you tried resetting your preferences?
