I have learned from watching several tutorials that 1920 X 1080 is the ideal dimensions for composition size in after effects. I was wondering if its the ratio that is most important and if so would it be alright to create a composition that is smaller while still being optimized for being displayed in video format on the web. The reason is because 1920 X 1080 is pretty large and the images I need for the video are not quite large enough to fill out the composition nicely when the dimensions are 1920 X 1080. I would very much appreciate some guidance.

That doesn't by itself make sense.

The right size for your composition depends on how you will be using the movie that you're creating---i.e., what devices and/or software will be used to play the video.

If, for example, you are creating a movie to be played full-frame on a high-definition television, then 1920x1080 makes sense.

If your video is going to the web, like Youtube or Vimeo, you could probably get away with 1280x720 that's a smaller HD sized video.
