3D layers not in camera view
on Sep 2, 2014 at 8:52:59 pm

I have a master comp where I am moving a camera around lots of 3D layers. There is a lot of camera movement and every time I add a new layer and turn its 3D layer on the layer is no where near where my camera is and i am having to some how move the layer into the frame and thats if i can find it.

At the moment I have the camera attached to a 3D Null with the separate XYZ position.

Is there a way to add a layer and some how parent it to another layer and then bring the layer in view of the camera so i can see it?

this is driving me crazy!

Thanks

Try my free script keen_3dLayerTools [link] (an update to an earlier script I wrote [link] that adds some new functionality).

That is such a useful script thank you!

Just so I know what is the way you would do it manually with out it?

I know if you have a camera parented to the null you can parent the 3d layer to the null and 0 out the xyz position but it some times does not work when you have moved the Z position on the camera layer?

That way also does not work if you have a null with the XYZ positions separated as i do in my current project.

Manually, you could parent the layer to the camera, zero out its orientation, zero out its X and Y position and set the Z position to the camera's zoom, then unparent the layer.

thank you so much for your quick response!

I will use your script though haha

Is there a technique for the the particular effect (trapcode) if i bring it in to my comp and the particles are not in the camera view too?

you cant parent that layer to anything can you?

The Particular layer itself must be 2D.

However, you can use lights to drive Particular emitters, and you could use the script on your emitter light to position it correctly in 3D space.

You could also use the script on a simple 3D null, then note its world position and set the emitter position in Particular accordingly.
