I'm working on scenes with a friend which involve adding cgi smoke to the background of the scene. Several scenes have objects that move across the screen in front of the cgi effect that we have to put in. How do you animate a mask, on the cgi effect, to make it appear that the object moving across the screen looks like its in front of the effect? As of right now the cgi effect appears in front of the scene, which is incorrect.

The easiest way I know of is to have the smoke effect as a separate layer above the clean background layer. Duplicate the background layer and put that above the smoke layer. Mask around the objects you want to have in front of the smoke.
