Hello

I feel like my AECC 2014 preview speed is really slow basted on my system.

Trying to figure out the problem/bottleneck.

I’m editing mostly 1920x1080 444 prores files from Resolve.

In AE 16 bit mode it takes about 2-3 seconds to render each frame at full res for playback. Same speed Preview/Ram Preview. No effects or layers.

Here are my system specs.
Drivers are up to date.

Mac Pro early 2009
OS X 10.9.4
Processor 2 x 2.93 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon
Memory 64 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics NVIDIA Quadro 4000

PCI
Slot 1/2 NVIDIA QUADRO
SLOT 3 REDROCKET
SLOT 4 OWC MERCURY ACCELSIOR _ E2
SLOT 5 Esata card

The OS and AE are running off the solid state drive in the Mercury E2

The main video files are on an external OWC Solid State External drive. ESATA to the Mercury E2.

Disk speed test showing 200mb write 350 read.

The AE scratch disk/cache is a 1tb internal 7200rpm drive. I have 600gb enabled for Max Disk Cache. Conformed Media Cache to the same drive.

AE Memory specs are..

RAM reserved for other apps 16gb
RAM for AE...48GB..

I’m not using Multiprocessing.

I’m also running an apple 30” cine monitor from the NVIDIA as well as a second small ASUS.
This might be the problem...

I feel like Work speed should be faster. Maybe I’m wrong. Do I need more GPU through a Chassis?

Is the compter to old? Do I need a better video card? Should I be rendering multi frames "at the same damn time"?

Any Ideas would be great!

Thanks!

You're saying that just reading and drawing a single frame of video with no effects takes 2-3 seconds? Ouch.

Is this true of all movies in all projects?

The gpu matters very little for After Effects.
Although...
Do you have your composition set to Ray-Traced renderer or the standard renderer?

Try running AE CC (After Effects version 12) and see how it does. Perhaps this is a CC 2014 issue.

Have it set to standard/classic render.

Yea.. just reading single frames..

If I open activity monitor when doing a ram preview.. it will show AE only using 7-10 gb

If I stack 5 layers of the same video and export lossless it will show AE using 14-15gb.

The 5 layer export renders at the same speed as a single layer full-res ram preview in the timeline.
