Limit the sensitivity of the add vertex tool?

Can I limit the area where the pen tool automatically switches to the add vertex tool when placing it on top of a path?

I'm tracing a bunch of detailed masks following country boundaries, so they have to be very accurate, but when I'm going to add the next point the tool changes to the add vertex tool even so I'm placing the cursor around 40 pixels apart from the last position, I have to zoom in a lot to be able to add the points where I need them, sometimes even extremely zoomed in I can't.

My comp is 4096 px by 2048 px, could that be a factor causing this?

Thanks.
David.

You could lock each mask after it is created, then you won't be able to add any vertices.

Yes, I know, but the problem is as I'm creating each of the mask, when I'm to add the next point it changes to the other tool, and I can't lock it because I haven't finished tracing the mask yet.

Best,
D.

I'm not sure that I understand the problem. Do you have to work on two masks at a time? Why can't you just work on 1, lock that one, then work on the other?

i think he's talking about when creating vertex points with the pen tool, and you need to create a new vertex that is very close to the last vertex (or any vertex on the same path) the tool changes from the pen tool to the convert vertex tool or the remove vertex tool.

i don't know of any fix for that, though you can create the vertex close to where you need it, then use the arrow keys to nudge it to where you want it.

Not totally sure if this would work with your project but I've found that if you do a rough outline and then go in adding points to refine the mask you can get closer to the previous vertices.
But couldn't you just create the point farther away and drag it into place instead of zooming in?

Exactly, I need to do what Kevin said, and I guess I'll have to do it like Tim suggests, but I should be able to do so without this annoying issue, not sure if it's a bug or what, but 40 pixels seems like a lot to me.

Thanks a lot guys.

Could you trace the outlines in Illustrator and then paste it in After Effects?

Here's another thought: without knowing what this map looks like, is it possible make a matte using Rotobrush? You could then use Autotrace, and there's your mask.
