Rendering time for 30 sec video 88 HOURS
on Jul 7, 2014 at 6:36:42 pm

I have a Vista 64 machine with an I7 processor, solid state drive and 12 gig of ram.

I just finished a short, 30 second, video for work and when I went to render it said 88 hours to complete. Using ray tracing as it allows me to create 3 d cubes.

I must have something wrong in the settings or something. Any ideas?

Bill

What version of After Effects are you using?
If you're using CC or CC 2014 (versions 12 and 13 respectively) instead of CS6 (version 11), you could use Cinema 4D Lite [link] to make your cubes instead. It will render significantly faster and give you more powerful control over your 3d (but the learning curve is larger).

Alternatively, you can create 3d cubes in any version of AE from the past decade by parenting six square solids to a null object.

The ray-traced renderer can be very slow if you don't have one of the supported NVIDIA GPUs to accelerate it. More info on the GPU in AE here [link]. Perhaps if you were to add an approved graphics card, you could speed things up.

Using CS6. My graphics card evidently doesn't support the ray tracing.

[Bill Triplett] "Using CS6. My graphics card evidently doesn't support the ray tracing."

What do you have the ray-tracing quality set to? (Composition Settings > Advanced > Options)

Higher numbers render more cleanly, but take longer. Lower numbers introduce more noise, but render faster. With a little experimentation, you may find a sweet spot for your comp.

I created a 3D cube in a comp called PC Comp but when I bring PC Comp into my main comp the cube is flat.

That's what the collapse transformations switch is for. Throw that switch in your main comp and your cube will suddenly be 3d!

Thank you. It still doesn't seem to take on the main comp lights.

It still doesn't seem to take on the main comp lights. It should.

Copy and paste the cube rig in your precomp and see how it looks in your actual main comp.

The color doesn't transfer to the main comp and I can't seem to color it. It is only grey.

Can you upload a reduced version of your project so we can see what's going on? Something is amiss somewhere, but without screenshots or an example project file, it's hard to tell.

Raytracing makes use of your gpu. You should make sure you have one compatible or that you at least include it on the "certified list".

This will give a huge boost to the performance.

Is there an "inexpensive" card that will accomplish this?

The Gtx 570 is a good "bang for buck" option.

Any of the Geforce 700 series cards such as the 760GTX 4GB will work. Those just have to be added to AE's Ray Tracer supported list.

I have a GTX 650 now. I saw a 750ti at my local store. Will that work?

Yes but that wont be a large improvement over the 650GTX. I would suggest a 760GTX 4GB card if you really want a major improvement. You can also add the 650GTX to the supported list now and see what the performance is like.
