Hi,

Am trying to emulate a true vector line effect in AE in the style of the original CRT monitor displays on the Atari 1980's Asteroids or Star Wars arcade games. Line work drawn up in AI and imported is fine to start with but wondered if anyone can suggest a simple method to get all points where coloured lines cross over and at each corner point to create a hotter white spot, simulating the CRT effect?

Example :

Will also plan to add some glow, echo and flicker for added retroness...

Any guidance or suggestions much appreciated!

Cheers,

Rich

Blend modes & glows will get you there.

For the overlapping lines, I would separate the lines into their own layers in AI, then import the AI file into AE as a composition. Set each imported layer's blending mode to "Add". That will make any overlap in the layers brighter.

For the glow, use an adjustment layer with the glow effect over top of all layers. Or pre-comp all layers, and apply the effect to the comp.

Hope that helps!

Also check this one out - a new freebie from Video Copilot called Color Vibrance - looks like it might make the process quicker:
