Am I nuts or is it common for Motion Graphics artist to crank out 6 minutes of animation for $4,000? I'm a 3d guy and I was mouth-agape when the client kept rejecting estimate refinements until we hit my floor and he admitted they'd been paying their last guy $1,000 for 90 seconds of animation.
Admittedly, it was simple, elegant animation... but still, I would expect the knowledge to crank out 4x that amount at 1920x1080 would be worth more.
Am I wrong?

I second Matthew's thoughts exactly. I do 60 for about that much at 720p. The company I usually work for, sells the videos for something between $8 and $12k.
There's a site for motion graphics companies and their average prices. Like a collective, if you will. Not sure if this is it, but it might be a good starting point http://startup-videos.com/designers/
