Best settings to render a 7 minute long slideshow/animation composition?

I just woke up to this huge .mov file with 10Gb. The composition has approximately 7 minutes.
I used the animation codec for quicktime files.
How should I go about this? This can't be right, there are only 200 photos on that slideshow with lots of animations/transitions.
I actually need a quick solution using the already gigantic file. Maybe rendering that file with new settings will be faster and, hopefully, compress it?

Composition settings:

720x480 pixels - D1/DV NTSC Widescreen (1,21)
06m53s
frame rate: 29,97

operating system:

OS X
2,66 GHz Intel Core i7
8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
AECS6

Also, I've been using After Effects now for almost 4 years, and the codec / rendering is a process that I'm not too familiar with. Could you guys also point me into a good tutorial or a good read ( explaining with details) about which codecs to use?

Thanks a lot.

You've been using AE for about 4 years and you HAVEN'T done much rendering? That's remarkable!

Anyway, it's tough to give you advice on media containers and codecs because we don't know what you have to DELIVER. What happens next with your completed file?

I have done lots of renders. But mostly for small files ( 30 secs vignettes); so I'd always go with .avi and .mov files that would be 1Gb tops.

Daniel Waldron

I rendered the 10Gb file into a H264 one. It reduced the size to 350Mb. It works for me ( it kept the video quality and a reasonable size).

I guess I need to learn more about codecs and preferences. Usually I don't have to deal with that with such short videos. Living and learning.

Thanks everyone.

Well, here's the thing: we still don't know what the ultimate use of this big ol' file is going to be. All we know is that it's in a DV Widescreen resolution.

If it's going to DVD, you do one thing. If you have some other use for it, you do something else. In the meantime, don't trash that huge file, because your next step will probably be to use it in Adobe Media Encoder.

Originally it is going to be shown in a presentation with a projector in a big screen. After that my client probably wants to upload it to youtube.

In that case, H264 is a great way to go.

So take that huge file, put it in Adobe Media Encoder, and select the preset to make an H.264. You should be good to go.

You MIGHT have to futz with the horizontal dimensions to make sure it's 16x9 square pixels. H.264 doesn't like non-square pixels.

If you're looking for small file size, I would create an H264 file. You can drop your 10GB file into Adobe Media Encoder and choose from their list of web presets to keep it simple.

It's best to find out if whoever you're delivering it to has a preference though. Depending what it's for, there could be specific format requirements. Either way, creating a master Animation file and exporting delivery files from AME is not a bad idea. This way, you can create multiple formats from one file without After Effects having to chug through everything multiple times.
