Script for Moving Forward a Specific Number of Frames
on May 14, 2014 at 2:15:31 am

I'm somewhat new to After Effects and this forum, so if this question has been asked and I didn't see it, I apologize.

My problem is this:
I have several text layers (something like 50 layers) that I group into Pre-Compositions. I would like to automate, or find a script or something to do the following actions to the layers in a Pre-Composition:

Opacity keyframe all layers at 0%
Select bottom layer
Move forward 5 seconds
Opacity keyframe at 100%
Move up one layer
Move back two seconds
Opacity keyframe
Move forward 5 seconds
Opacity keyframe at 100%

and to repeat this for all of the layers in a Pre-Composition.
Is something like this possible? I've been looking all around online to try to find a way to do this quickly or to make a script or something, but have come up empty.

Thanks
Austin

It's not clear when you move forward/backward AND change property values if this involves one, two or ALL layers. I suggest that you re-read what you posted and then re-post and write slowly as you describe what you want to do with the layers, which layers, which property and when this happens.

Okay, sorry about that.

This is what is going on/what I would like to be able to automate:
I'm starting at 0:00:00:00.
Select ALL layers in the Pre-Composition, and create an Opacity keyframe with a value of 0%.
Then I move forward 5 seconds to 0:00:05:00, select only the bottom layer, and create an Opacity keyframe with a value of 100%.
I then select only the layer directly above the bottom, and move backwards 2 seconds to 0:00:03:00. I create an Opacity keyframe with a value of 0%. Then, staying on the same layer, move forward 5 seconds to 0:00:08:00, and create another Opacity keyframe with a value of 100%.
This process continues until all the layers in each Pre-Composition have been keyframed.

So all of this is basically just gradually fading in text layers, but I would like to find a way to automate this part of the workflow.

So ... starting from the lowest layer, you want each layer to fade in over 5 seconds and for each subsequent layer above to have its fade in start point to be offset by three seconds.

Paste the following Expression into the Opacity prop -
duration = 5;
offset = 3;
indexScalar = offset*(index-1);
linear(time,indexScalar,indexScalar+duration,0,100)
