I'm sorry if this is redundant, but I've searched all over google and i dont think i understand masks, despite all the youtube tutorials.

I have a spinning globe as a precomp. I have a paint bucket png on my main comp.

I want to animate the globe dropping and mask the edge of the bucket, so that it looks like its floating. So the bottom half of the globe would be cut off when on top of the bucket.

Can not for the life of me figure this out. I masked the comp on my main timeline, but when i animate the ball dropping, its half the whole transition through..not only at the bottom.

Am i making sense? Thanks!

I'm having a hard time visualizing what you mean. Is your problem that the mask moves with the layer?

You have a few options:
1. Animate the mask after animating the layer's transforms.

2. Duplicate the paint can, stick the globe precomp between the paint can layers, and use an Add mask on the top paint can layer to reveal the only parts of the paint can that should not be occluded by the globe.

3. Use a track matte instead of a mask to matte the globe over the paint can.
