After Effects Feature Request - Auto restart
on Mar 18, 2014 at 2:00:56 pm

I just sent Adobe a feature request for AE for a menu option that would close and relaunch automatically (with the option to also automatically reload the project that is currently open).

Why? Well, I tend to do a lot of plugin installation of trials to see if there's anything that will help out with the project I am currently working on, and I find that I have to do this manually each time I have to close and shut down after installing a plugin.

Am I alone in this or do other people think it would be useful to have? If so, please also submit a feedback request to Adobe to have this feature added.

You have the "Cntl + Alt + Shift + P" which will open your most recent project. There is also a script that will do it too, Load Project or Template at Startup

Still manually closing the app, relaunching, and pressing a keyboard combination when I could simply click a menu option and have it do that on its own.

Then check out the script, should do exactly what you need.

John, I don't think you understand the issue. These projects are, first, constantly changing. Thus having a script I have to manually set just adds to the time involved, doesn't subtract from it.

Second, I still have to close the app and re-launch it myself. And I don't always have it in the dock (I trend to constantly change what is in the dock because there's nothing more annoying then accidentally opening apps while trying to launch others), so if I have forgotten to add AE back to the dock, it's not as simple to open up.

You're the only person I know that installs plugins only as and when they need to use it. I suppose that you then uninstall these plugins as soon as you are done with the project? This doesn't sound like an efficient way to use plugins.

I guess I am just trying to find the right effect and so I do some Google searches and look for effects that might possibly either save me time or allow me to generate an effect that I can't do myself.

And, on top of that, the majority of the time the plugin description vs. its actual abilities are overblown.

You never uninstall software trials that you decide aren't worth paying for?

I know we each have individual workflows and develop work habits, so take this with a grain of salt – but moving things in and out of the dock seems like more trouble than its worth.

I have a minimal dock, just Finder, QT 7, Downloads, Documents folder and Trash. I rarely click to open apps, having been a QuickSilver user for years and lately I've transitioned to using Spotlight to launch apps by typing the first few characters of the app's name.

For info on the excellent and free QuickSilver see: http://qsapp.com

I find it faster and easier than the Dock, YMMV – indeed I expect it would.

you could script something in autohotkey or vb. a single button like windows+q would close ae, open previous project, uninstall plugins silently, and do all sorts of funky stuff automatically.

If you're going to make a request to support this workflow, why not request the ability to refresh plugins without quitting and reopening the app?

That would be fine too. I am assuming that there might be a larger issue at stake by doing so.

Even FCPX has to be shut down and relaunched to show plugins. Not aware of any other NLE that doesn't do the same.

I hear you -- I want this feature too. Esp for me when I do lipsyncing and am constantly rendering and re-rendering tons of audio / animations, my RAM fills up quickly and I need to close and relaunch AE a lot (purge command is NOT the same as fully closing and starting AE).

I'm trying to do this via scripting. I can get it to work when I launch the script from ExtendScript Toolkit, but if I launch the script from AE, AE just crashes.

This is the current script. I'm trying to figure out a way to get AE to launch the script outside of itself, so it won't crash, but not sure if that's possible.

var thefile = new File(*whatever project file I want the script to re-open*);

aftereffects.quit();
$.sleep(3000)
thefile.execute();

Actually just figured this out -- run this script from After Effects and it'll close AE and reopen the same project that was open when it closed. Only tested this on Windows 7 / AE CC 14. Note that this script will open and close ESTK while it's running (it has to run itself FROM ESTK, not from AE).

// get current AE project, close AE, then reopen that same project
var bt = new BridgeTalk ();
bt.target = 'estoolkit'
bt.body = 'var result; var bt0 = new BridgeTalk(); bt0.target = "aftereffects"; bt0.body = "app.project.file;"; bt0.onResult = function(resObj){result = resObj.body}; bt0.send(); $.sleep(1000); var theFile = new File(result); aftereffects.quit(); $.sleep(1000); theFile.execute();'
bt.send();

// quit ESTK (opened as a result of above)
var bt2 = new BridgeTalk();
bt2.target = 'estoolkit'
bt2.body = 'app.quit();'
bt2.send();
