Placing MOOV atom at beginning of mp4 file
on Mar 13, 2014 at 2:56:40 pm

Hi, I've been asked to encode a video to the following specs: 1024x576 mp4 around 800 Kbps video, 64 Kbps 44,000 audio with the MOOV atom at the beginning of the file.

I have two problems doing that in AE:
1. The output settings refuse to encode an mp4 at 1024x576, saying it must be constrained to 720x576.
2. There doesn't appear to be a setting for 'Fast Start' or 'Progressive Download' or anything else that might be related to the MOOV atom.

I looked also for third party solutions to the MOOV problem (ie output to prores and then put through something else) and couldn't find anything for OSX, only a few things for Windows. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if this will help out, but it seems to contain a lot of info on the MOOV Atom:

Check out Handbrake - has Mac, Windows and Linux versions - all under GNU licence. Not sure if it has your moov atoms requirements, but it does have a number of options to encode.

Thanks - I have Handbrake, but I don't see any relevant options.

If it is a matter of muxing, perhaps this for Mac -

as pointed out by the Handbrake FAQ.

Thanks, I got that and it will be useful in the future. In the end, I found AtomicParsley which (when I figured out how to use a CLI app!) allowed me to see the MooV atom location. I found the best output method was to output Prores from AE, then run that through Wonder__ Video Converter. (Incidentally MUCH better quality h264 output than AE). Haven't got final approval back from client yet, but I'm confident that's the one.

I found a little Mac utility that does this (and only this) called QTIndexSwapper2 - not sure if it's still around. Having said that, it seems that most encoders now correctly set the MOOV atem, and so I haven't had to use it in a long while.

(Just noticed there's a link to it in that Adobe article that Joseph posted a link to.)
