I'm combining various film transfer and video source material for a 1080p 23.976 documentary.

The super 8 footage was transferred to 24p/1080 so I now have a 1:1 film/video frame correspondence, but the footage was originally shot at 18fps. Anyone know of a way to convert the frame rate to get the smoothest motion? Repeating every 3rd frame would result in the correct number of frames but without interpolation I suspect it would look jerky.

I've heard of folks using a technique which involves putting the footage in a nested comp at an accelerated frame rate and then using time stretch to bring it back to the desired target frame rate.

I'd appreciate what you have to share.
